Why Do Pcp Cylinders Need Pressure Regulators?

2026-07-03

Why do some PCP systems require pressure regulators while others don't? If the cylinder itself can store high-pressure air, why add another component? The primary function of a pressure regulator isn't to reduce pressure, but to stabilize the output pressure. For shooters aiming for precision, it's practically a core component for improving shooting consistency. What exactly is the function of a pressure regulator? Do all pcp air cylinders need one?

The pressure inside a PCP air cylinder is constantly changing.

Many people believe that once a pcp air cylinder is filled to 300 Bar, the output pressure remains constant throughout use. This isn't actually the case. With each shot, the air in the cylinder decreases, and the internal pressure gradually drops. For example, a cylinder initially filled to 300 Bar might gradually decrease in pressure to 280 Bar, 250 Bar, 220 Bar, and so on after continuous firing. Without any pressure regulation, the pressure of the air released with each shot will change. Initially, the power is ample, but the pressure decreases as firing progresses, altering the bullet's initial velocity and trajectory. Snowrain's high-pressure aluminum alloy PCP cylinders possess stable pressure resistance and excellent sealing performance, providing a continuous and stable source of high-pressure air for the decompression system, allowing the entire PCP system to perform better.

The pressure reducing valve can be understood as a pressure manager.

It doesn't allow the cylinder to continuously output 300 Bar, but rather adjusts the high-pressure air to a fixed pressure, such as 120 Bar or 150 Bar, before supplying it to the air gun's operating system. This way, regardless of whether the cylinder contains 300 Bar, 260 Bar, or 200 Bar, as long as the pressure exceeds the pressure reducing valve's set value, the output pressure remains essentially consistent. For shooting, this means each bullet receives more stable power, has less fluctuation in initial velocity, and a more concentrated point of impact. This stability provides a significant advantage, especially in competitive shooting or long-range shooting. Snowrain rigorously controls cylinder dimensions, interface precision, and pressure resistance during product manufacturing to provide more stable and reliable operating conditions for compatible pressure-reducing systems, resulting in a superior overall user experience for customers.
